OpenAI launches its SearchGPT Prototype (with a waitlist) OpenAI launches its SearchGPT Prototype (with a waitlist)

As we have mentioned in most posts covering Artificial Intelligence, or Large Language Models (LLMs), current iteration of this technology does not suggest anything for the masses, i.e., most users see AI as a toy to play with every now and then in order to not fall behind, and that’s pretty much it. While there are no reports nor solid data confirming the assumption, it feels safe to say that most users that don’t need creative assistance with texts and images tried using ChatGPT in the same way as Google: they searched for answers to questions. In a recent move, OpenAI officially recognizes this pattern of user behavior.

According to the announcement, the new functionality will bring together the best of both worlds: AI will answer questions conversationally, like a real person, and provide links to the sources of information it used to come up with the answer. Moreover, your queries can have several iterations, and each of them will add context, so the ultimate answer will be to the point. Theoretically, that is.

All that sounds really nice and convenient. If you’ve been using the internet for a decade or so, your queries to Google probably don’t look like sentences you would use IRL. With SearchGPT, this discrepancy will disappear.

OpenAI has told The Verge that this wave of the prototype testing is for 10,000 users only, so if you want to be a part of this effort, log in to your OpenAI account and sign up for the waitlist here. Else, simply wait while the results of this work will be integrated into ChatGPT proper, since this is exactly what the developer plans to do, at least so far.
