Microsoft plans to support Office on Windows 10 up to late 2029 Microsoft plans to support Office on Windows 10 up to late 2029

As of this writing, Windows 10 is still the most popular operating system among Microsoft’s products. Its share is 48.89%, while that of Windows 11 is 47.83%. The latter is catching up, of course, since the Redmond company left its customers no choice in this regard: the full-fledged support of Win 10 ends on October 14, 2025, so most regular users who don’t have any rigid requirements for the OS are gradually migrating to Win 11. We have covered this subject in several posts, the latest of which, Windows 10 support ends soon: implications and alternatives, goes beyond reciting what the move means and suggests some operating systems that can replace Windows.

Microsoft Office — in all its incarnations — is among the most widely used and influential software suites for Windows. It’s not ubiquitous and faces fierce competition from Google Workspace and other products, but millions of users worldwide consider it to be the go-to solution for all things related to texts, data, and slides.

Microsoft to end support of Office on Win 10 in October 2029

This is how it will go down for the Office suite on Windows 10, version by version.

Microsoft 365 (Office 365)

  • Release of new features ends in August 2026 on the Current Channel (regular users) and January 2027 for corporate customers.
  • Security updates will be published up to October 10, 2028.

Office 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 (perpetual versions)

  • Office 2016 and 2019 – support ends October 14, 2025 (all operating systems);
  • Office 2021 – support continues until October 2026;
  • Office 2024 will be supported up to October 2029.

After October 14, 2025, Windows 10 itself goes into the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, designed to run for three years, until October 2028. There are several enrollment options; those involving money will, as of this writing, cost US$30 for consumers and US$61 for businesses.

As you understand, the software will continue to function even after all those dates given above have passed, but for safety reasons, it is not recommended to continue using the suite beyond its ESU period. Want to consider alternatives? Here are a couple of our earlier pieces suggesting them:
