Foldable iPhone: what’s known so far
Foldable phones have been around for a while. There may be different opinions about when this form factor actually appeared, but for those in their forties, a flip phone by Erickson is probably the icon still remembered with a sad and warm smile. That one wasn’t a foldable device as it is understood now: there was only a small monochrome screen on the model, and it didn’t fold at all. Nowadays, the devices that set the trends in that domain all stem from Royole FlexPai, the first commercially available phone with a flexible (to a degree) OLED display. Another hit is Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. Can Apple stay out of this race? This piece scoops the respective rumors and speculations.
Foldable iPhone: possible specs
- The foldable iPhone will likely be book-like, similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series, which means the fold is a horizontal fold.
- There is expected to be an outer display, measuring around 5.49 inches, and the inner display, which will be in the range from 7.74 to 7.9 inches.
- The camera will likely be dual, possibly with a 48 MP sensor for both the main and ultra-wide lenses.
- As for storage and RAM, the rumored options are 12 GB of the latter and the choice of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB of the former.
- When folded, the device could be about 9 to 9.5 mm thick, and 4.5 to 4.8 mm in the unfolded state.
- The hinge will likely be a proprietary Apple design that minimizes the crease; it will probably be made of stainless steel and titanium alloys.
When will Apple start selling its foldable iPhone?
There are no official nor unofficial (leaked) dates so far, but the industry expects to see this new product in late 2026 or early 2027, since Apple has actually been working on foldable technology since 2018.
