But if you just read your email everyday or something like that you really would not need any antispy ware or virus. I always think it’s worth it to get a free antivirus like avast or avg just in case tho. About registry, I would not suggest cleaning it Inless you have a old computer or one that’s really slow I changing your registry can cause complications and errors could result. Or at least make sure the program your using makes backups. I mean I’m not saying there not safe. It’s just it could happen.

CCleaner (Piriform) is SAFE for use on registry!

Use CCleaner for cleaning unnecessary files, registry, and unwanted cookies from Windows. CCleaner will prompt you to back up the registry values (advised). I've tested this freeware product on several of my own systems, and market-tested on about 20 associated systems and networks. It works and it's safe. The only registry values it ever adjusts are those dealing with install/uninstall, activeX, null/orphaned value, and temp reloc. Out of about 40 systems I know of, there has not been a single issue with any of them.

Also, ANYONE going on the Internet should most definitely have ACTIVE Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and a good Firewall functioning on their system. Email is how 90% of viruses are spread!

Cyber Defender is a nice program if you want to shell out the cash. The others I have found to be ineffective in testing versions available 2/2009.

A INDEN KLEEF wrote:Dear all ,

Having installed the latest RM version, I encounter severe problems scanning my computer. Sony VIAO does not seem to like RM. F.e. ALM is disabled, some of the software does no longer function and all of the tweaks are reset. PC tools does not seem to have a solution. What can or must I do to solve the problem? :o

This is not uncommon with some registry software. Registry mechanic has never impressed me. I'm amazed you were able to get it to do something! I tested RM on several systems and found NOTHING changed in performance at all! Anyone encountering this issue should take note that by default, MOST applications dealing with the registry will at least prompt a user to back-up the registry files, if it doesn't back them up automatically. If the files were backed up, the fix is simple: Merge the back-up registry values with the main registry again! If not- ouch! Then a user would have to re-install or repair-install all affected applications.

I recommend staying away from software that will "tweak" your system. If you want to use something that claims it will improve your system's performance, then please remember to back-up your important files, back-up your registry values, and make use of system restore points.

david wrote:Hi folks,

Well, where to start -- I loaded up the new windows yesterday, loaded up SI, but when I tried to get in to my account on your home page - it said I didn't exist. I tried to register, and it said I failed to enter the correct code 3 times (before (I gave up). I managed to sign up with a phoney name, but when I try to enter the details into my local client - it says "password or email is not valid".

Life is too short to muck around with bad software, so I'm off -- I'll try again later when (hopefully) your product has matured.

The problem's not with SI, it's a W7 bug.

For an example:

VLC media player
***** 929
Developer VideoLAN Team Users 215 257
[Freeware]

DivX Converter
***** 150
Developer DivX, Inc. Users 101 188
[Demo]

This small thing, can make the bigger thing.
Thinks for that!.

Divx is Freeware. Anyone reading this? He has a really god point. Other updater sites provide lots of information on available open source applications, freeware, and some shareware titles. Wouldn't be hard to do: An attractive html with some flash ads/action, and a whole bunch of links! (and a little bit of legal footwork too.)

JohaViss wrote:I would like to see the following additions to the SI software:
Option to remove an application from the list.
Option to 'lock' an application. (Never look for updated version)
Connection through a proxy.
Printable list of applications.
Update based on a timer. (Once a day, once a week, on every reboot, etc..)

At this moment, the SI application is not very usefull. There are a lot of wrong versions. It is not clear where SI is looking for the version number. I haven a number of applications that store in the regisrty the first installed version, the actual installed version can be retreived from the exe.

Sometimes the supplier is the wrong one. Some applications from different suppliers have the same name.

I'd ike to share some of what I know about updaters with you:

The problem isn't reading the registry. The main issue with all updaters is how to interpret (correctly) the dated information contained in Windows vast dynamic libraries. Most of the configuration files contain dated information, but any updater will not be able to tell what file is the lates build. This is mostly due to developers writing the files incorrectly, making them low priority, or putting the version information in a txt file instead of an ini or dll. Most updaters avoid (wisely) scanning exe files, depending on how intrusive their scanning protocol, as they may errantly activate an executable file.

I'm new to SI, but from what I've seen so far, it deals with Windows pretty well. The only tried and true, 100% effective method for updating is for software and driver developers to email every user to let them know an update is available. Out of the updaters I've tried, I'd rank this one as number two. The number one on the list doesn't scan every installed program, so that makes this one a really close second. Good luck!

Paula Lowrance wrote:I was prompted to download a software update for HP Deskjet F4180. Once I download the FREE Driver Robot I found it was not free and tried to uninstall. It has installed itself on my desktop and I can not remove!!!! When I try it will not respond. WARNING A GIMMICK TO TAKE YOUR MONEY.

Paula, could you post information for me on this "driver robot"? Who made it, where you downloaded it from, etc. Post here in a reply. The more information you can provide, the better. I take pleasure in finding and obliterating Malware! It's a twisted hobby! Are you running current Anti-virus and Anti-spyware? This "robot" sounds like it could be eradicated by running a FULL sweep of your system using your choice of security software.

Also, there's always a way to uninstall every application. Have you tried pulling the plug on the program using a super process controller? You can get a free one (Process Controller 3.0, K-23 Productions) from Softpedia.com. Then you can use an application like Revo Uninstaller (free download from Cnet) to remove the program. If that still doesn't work, there are other ways to rid your system of this infection. Let me know.
